Sunny Scarlett grew up on a farm in the small town of McKean in northwest Pennsylvania. In the whole town there was just one blinking red stoplight. The first picture she ever took was of her pet duck Posy, she was eleven years old. Unfortunately when Sunny opened the camera she discovered there was in fact no film inside and her first picture was consequently lost forever. This was just one of many lessons she would learn as she mastered her craft.
While pursuing her MFA in Photography Sunny began to see the photo as a means to eternally preserve time in the form of an image, an image which could be translated as proof of existence and life. This is when she began her extensive photo documentation projects. In 2001 Sunny photographed everything she ate for one whole year. The final work was made into a graph, each day was displayed using contact sheets. This extraordinarily detailed and accurate record of food intake literally equated food to life. The days where she ate more food she lived more.
For Sunny's thesis she photographed her entire wardrobe. This project was called Secret Vocabulary and referenced the signals fashion (high or low) sends out into the world.
After graduation Sunny moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career as an artist. During her time in Los Angeles Sunny developed her new body of work titled Homebound. Although Sunny hopes to revisit her photography background at some point, her current work tends to employ more experimental material. Sunny had her first Solo Show in the Los Angeles Area at Tarryn Teresa Gallery at Bergamot Station, summer 2007
Currently, Sunny lives in Brooklyn NY, where she is continuing her work on the Homebound series. She also runs a small business with her mother making fused glass jewelry.
